Finding Hope and Understanding in the Bible

Updated: Dec 15, 2020

There are moments when we do not understand why something has happened. Perhaps a family member has been struck with a terrible illness, or a relationship becomes strained, or there are problems at work. Where can we turn when we encounter these difficult moments? Thankfully we can turn to Biblical examples to help show us that we are not alone with our struggles and that eventually, we can appreciate the dark times, because they provide contrast and clarity to the good times. But sometimes finding hope in the Bible can be difficult if you do not use right the tools and resources to study it.

There is no shortcut or easy way to God. It takes work and dedication to form the strong bond that you crave. Reading and praying on a regular basis can help you build hope and further understand the Bible.

In the New Testament, scripture says that God is, “the God of patience and comfort” (Romans 14:4-5). The Bible portrays God as longsuffering, considering how the Israelites continually rejected His guidance. In the New Testament, Jesus, the Apostles, and the prophets also highlight God’s patience.

God has repeatedly dealt with and continued to love mankind regardless of its sins. We must see that eventually, His longsuffering with sinful humanity ends. We saw this with Noah, Sodom, and Gomorrah in the days of Abraham, and it will end again when Jesus returns (2 Peter 3:10). To become righteous in the eyes of the Lord, we often need a guide to lead us toward this understanding and hope. We can find comfort in God, but we must know where to look, and we can do this by getting to know the Bible better.

Read the Bible, then read it again

The Bible might have confused you the first time you read it. This is natural, but you are not alone. You cannot read the Bible once, and expect to understand everything that the Lord has said. What can be helpful in understanding the Bible is to think about it in parts.

The Bible is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. Paul commanded (2 Timothy 2:15) that we should separate these two sections to serve God properly. God speaks to man in different ways throughout history, and He expects different things from men than he did in Biblical times.

You must learn to divide the word of truth to unlock the Bible. Only then can you appreciate the message that God is trying to say to you in your time of need and in your time of happiness.

Study scripture together

You are meant to study the Bible alone as well as with others. Both forms of reading the Bible are necessary to understand God’s word holistically. Consider joining a Bible study to learn how to understand verses in the Bible.

It takes humility to say you do not understand the Bible. God is understanding of this humility and will help provide you with the knowledge you would not have gained otherwise. You can read and study God’s word online, and it can be an excellent tool to bring you closer to his light and mercy.

Take the education further

God made a promise to Abraham. "Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:2-3) So we are called to follow His law and teachings and that we will likewise be blessed when we do.

We are blessed when we look into the word of God. "But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does." (James 1:25)
