7 Ways to Love Your Spouse: Encouragement for a Christian Marriage

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

Marriage is an institution that was ordained by God, and therefore, a husband and wife should strive to live a godly life. Marriage comes with unparalleled blessings and advantages. Not only does it give you the foundations to create a family of your own, but it also brings you closer to God and enriches your faith.

It is vital that you love your spouse if you want to have a successful marriage. However, relationships in general can come with problems and challenges, and during these times, showing love can feel tiresome. Amidst the unavoidable trials that you may face in your marriage, having faith, hope, and love resources may help to ease the burden. If your heart is overwhelmed, there are plentiful lessons about faith, hope, and love online to help you through both the good and the bad times. Find out how you can renew the spark and love your spouse even more fully with the seven steps below.

1. Appreciate your spouse.

That you can love your spouse and make them feel appreciated is not a myth; following biblical teachings on marriage makes it achievable. Remember that your spouse purposed to spend the rest of their life with you. Words are powerful, and when the Bible equates marriage to becoming one flesh in Genesis 2:24, it shows just how strong the bond of your marriage vows should be. Making your home hospitable and prioritizing your spouse’s happiness without sacrificing yours is one of the first steps to strengthening this bond. Learn to be mindful of your spouse’s feelings and needs and not just your own. Sometimes, it might be as simple as just appreciating each other and letting everything else fall into place.

2. Involve God in your marriage.

It takes God’s grace for a marriage to last a lifetime. If you involve Him in your marriage, God will surely give you the grace to go through any trials that you encounter along the way. The Bible says, “A threefold cord is not easily broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12). If you intertwine God in your marriage, you and your spouse will enjoy a lifetime of love. In worshipping and praying together, you create a firm foundation for your marriage, and this serves to cement your love for your partner.

A closer walk with God may not guarantee you a happy relationship at all times, but it will give you every reason to continue loving your spouse. As written in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in God always and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways, submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” When faced with challenges in your relationship, trusting in God gives you the strength to carry on and love your spouse, even when anger tells you otherwise.

3. Go back to the basics.

Some people believe that romance ceases when you tie the knot, but this does not have to be the case. Always bear in mind that longevity in marriage takes commitment, sacrifice, and selflessness. You can work to maintain the initial affection by not abandoning the things you used to do when first dating. Revisiting those things could be the beginning of reviving your love for your spouse. Take a trip together, surprise each other with gifts, help in the kitchen. Whatever you do, always remember to continue practicing the little loving things that make your spouse smile.

4. Be gentle, caring, and patient.

If you are going through a rough patch, be careful to think before you speak. It never helps to say hurtful words; they only worsen the situation. As Proverbs 15:1 says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Take your time before you speak to your spouse and choose your words wisely. To a great extent, your choice of words determines how healthy your relationship will be. A wise choice of words makes your spouse feel loved and draws them closer.

Caring for your partner gives them every reason to be a better spouse. Marriage has its own share of challenges, but this should not serve as an excuse to love your spouse less. Every challenge you face as a couple should give you a reason to care for your partner, and this will go a long way to improve your marriage.

5. Make time for your spouse.

Being there for each other creates a strong bond between you and your spouse. Plan to spend as much quality time with each other as possible; this gives you a great chance to learn and understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Try as much as possible to refrain from extra commitments that take up too much of your time and deny you and your spouse special moments together.

6. Find faith, hope, and love resources.

There are great resources that will give you insightful information on how to improve your marriage. If you are looking for lessons about faith, hope, and love online, you will find many that can uplift your spirits when you feel like giving up. Remember that marriage was ordained by God, and He also knows that it is not easy. He has provided resources in the form of scriptures that can help restore your bond as a couple. When you are feeling overwhelmed, going back to the scriptures and other resources on faith, hope, and love is a great start.

7. Make the Bible your friend.

There is no magic pill that can guarantee a happy marriage; dealing with difficulties in a relationship is part of the package. If you are looking for answers on how to have a godly relationship with your spouse amidst fights and other challenges, the Bible should be your first reference point. Ephesians 5:22-28 reminds us that it is the duty of a husband to love his wife, and the duty of a wife to submit her husband. Before involving friends or other outside influences, search through the scriptures when you need inspiration for how to love your spouse the right way.
