5 Bible verses about friendship

Friendship is one of God’s most beautiful gifts to humanity. Through fellowship with friends, you’re able to strengthen your faith, and bring yourself closer to God. Here are 5 Bible verses about friendship with wonderful graphics to go along with them.

1. "Do to others as you would have them do to you." - Luke 6:31 (NIV)

This is one of the most famous Bible verses of all time and for good reason. Both Christians and non-Christians see the beautiful simplicity and truth in this verse, as it transcends all boundaries of faith. That is why it’s also one of the most important Bible verses about friendship.

Friendship is about extending your love, appreciation, and respect to another person. When Christian friends come together, they see themselves in the other person. This mentality allows you to treat the needs of the other person as your own. This way, you’ll treat them as you’d like to be treated, and they’ll do the same in return.

2. “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” - Proverbs 13:20 (NIV)

Just because you have friends doesn’t mean that they’re cultivating your spirit or bringing you closer to God. If your friends lack good judgment or faith, they could be leading you down a path to destruction. Choosing your friends wisely will benefit you in the future.

Remember that you’re a reflection of the people around you. This is true for many reasons. First, you choose your company. If you’re surrounded by fools, it’s because you chose to be surrounded by fools. Alternatively, if you’re surrounded by wise people, it’s because you wanted to be.

Secondly, your friends have the power to change your thought patterns. If your friends want you to turn away from your faith, it may lead you down a dark path. Hopefully, you choose to surround yourself with people who respect your faith, allowing you to flourish.

3. "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." - Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)

Whether you’re mourning the death of a loved one or struggling to pay the bills, a true friend extends love and compassion. It is love in action. This is the beauty of true friendship.

There are plenty of Bible verses about friendship and love, but few capture the essence of true friendship like this one. After all, friendship is about placing your trust in another person. You need to know that you have someone by your side who will not abandon you. Surround yourself with people who can endure difficult times with you, but don’t forget to show them that you can do the same.

4. "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." - Galatians 6:2 (NIV)

Supporting your friends isn’t just about fulfilling social obligations. Carrying the burdens of those closest to you aligns with God’s law as well. If you’re unwilling to help endure hard times for your friend, you’re rejecting a basic tenet of the Christian faith.

When you follow Christ, you act as He would act. Would Christ abandon His friends when they need Him? Would Christ refuse to carry the burdens of His friends, because it was too difficult or inconvenient? Being a strong, supportive friend is a necessary part of being a good Christian.

5. “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” - Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)

When you think about your relationship with God, you might think of it as a singular connection, separate from other people. Yet this couldn’t be further from the truth. Believing in God also means believing in your community and your fellow man.

God gave you friends to give you strength. Without others, you may give in to despair, or feel alone in the world. Friendship allows you to see God in the faces of others and provides the strength to spread the Word of God to many more.
