God’s Point of View on Family Values

The importance of family

The institution of the family is as important now as it has ever been. The recent attacks on the family at the hands of modern culture has caused many people to change their values to fit society. This is the opposite of what God has called us to do concerning the family. So how do you stand for God in today’s culture? What should you do to ensure that your family will remain faithful to God and endure in bringing Him honor and glory? To answer these and other questions, you need to make sure your family is under God’s leadership. The best way to do this is to get to know your Bible, and understand God’s point of view on family values.

Lead by example

There are many scriptures telling how to maintain a spiritual family. Consider for example Deuteronomy 6:4-9. This passage is known as the “Shema,” which is Hebrew for “hear.” So what was Israel supposed to hear? They needed to hear that God is our God and that He is one and that we are to love God with all our heart, soul, and strength. Everyone needed to keep these commandments taught in the home. According to this passage, these truths were to be taught by parents to their children in the home as a matter of constant reminder and discussion.

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7, NKJV)

This passage, along with others like Acts 17:11 and 2 Timothy 3:15 for example, show how important it is to study the Bible with your family. Thus, it is your job as a parent to take ownership of your relationship with God so that you are able to teach your children the importance of them having their own relationship with Him. This is a big responsibility, but God will give you the strength and wisdom you need to provide spiritual encouragement to your children in order to have a spiritual family.

Too often parents depend on preachers and other church teachers to be the spiritual educators of their children. However, church is meant to nurture and grow a relationship with Christ and be used to equip believers for effective ministry. Church should be the supplemental education alongside your own personal study in your home. It is the parents’ responsibility to teach God’s Word to their children in order to promote the same atmosphere for children to develop a genuine faith similar to Timothy. Proverbs 22:6 holds a promise and a measure of hope to those who are diligent in educating their children in scripture: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (NKJV).

How to study the Bible as a family

God designed family Bible study for his commandments and statutes to be passed down to the next generation. From the oral education of Adam and Eve to their children to the study of the written scriptures now, parents have been given the task of educating their children in God’s Word.

How can you as a parent get to know your Bible better and receive the spiritual encouragement you need to lead your family spiritually? There are many options. These include personal Bible study, family devotion week, purchasing Bible study materials and lessons on spiritual topics or books of the Bible, and registering for Bible courses online.

Taking Bible courses even as a family is a great way to deepen your understanding of scripture to have a stronger relationship with God. Online Bible courses provide a unique, interactive way to study particular spiritual topics that interest you. You can even work at your own pace. You have the freedom to stop whenever you need to and have discussion and interaction, and you have the freedom to look up unfamiliar words or phrases.

Benefits of family Bible study

There are many benefits of studying the Bible as a family. Children often try to imitate their parents, and your children will see how seriously you are taking your faith. This can, in turn, help them establish their own faith. It will also show that you are investing in your children’s spiritual well being. This creates quality time for children and parents to deepen those bonds on a spiritual level.

You can also use this time to talk about living a life that glorifies God. This could initiate great discussions about culturally relevant topics and establishing a biblical perspective and approach to these topics.
