“There is hope in God; he has a path for your life and is there for you through all trials.”
This quote is intended to reinforce our faith in God, to assure us of His guidance throughout the journey of life. However, even in good spiritual health, we sometimes question our ability to stay true to the path God has made for us; we sometimes grow worried, fearful of the potential obstacles set before us, or weary of the detours along the way.
A Community of Spiritual Encouragement
Faith is often described as a personal commitment— a journey dedicated to God above all else in life, including oneself.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Our path to God is rarely a straight line. Oftentimes, we depend on external encouragement to bolster the strength of our beliefs. Community and friendship have the ability to empower and inspire us when we need it most.
“We live by encouragement, and we die without it—slowly, sadly, and angrily.”
This quote applies to all facets of life, whether you are attaining lofty career goals, or willing yourself to do one more pull-up. And, religion is absolutely no exception to this reality.
Consider Paul and Timothy, the latter of whom was a preacher wavering in his faith. Paul noticed Timothy’s struggles and acted accordingly to help his friend in need. When Timothy’s enthusiasm waned, Paul “stirred up” the proverbial flames of his faith. When Timothy lost sight of vital lessons, Paul reminded him of his own uplifting teachings. When Timothy doubted his own physical or mental capabilities, Paul pushed him forward to use the unique gifts God had given him.
Later, when Paul found himself condemned to death in prison, a rejuvenated Timothy was there to stand beside him. Hand in hand, they embodied the power of friendship and encouragement in faith.
Timothy is a perfect reminder of how necessary encouragement is. Despite incredible talent and purpose, he found himself discouraged and burdened, in need of a gentle push in the right direction.
If you have ever felt as though God’s path for you was shrouded with uncertainty, you likely know the value of having a support system and community to fall back on.
However, not everyone is lucky enough to have a “Paul” by their side. If you find yourself struggling to find encouragement in your life, the Getting to Know Your Bible free Online Study Course can be your “Paul.” With inspiring scriptures and daily encouragement from God online, our course can be the resource you need to overcome hardships and reaffirm your faith.
After all, time is of the essence when it comes to repentance and belief.
Embrace God’s Plan to Conquer Doubt as Quickly as Possible
“But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is.” (Hebrews 11:16)
Feeling discouraged is natural; the story of Timothy tells us as much. Yet, there is an urgency in moving past doubt to capture the essence of your faith:
“He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. He who does not believe shall be condemned.” (Mark 16:15-16)
We may praise “the merciful patience of God Almighty,” but we should always bear in mind that his long-suffering ways will not last forever. The idea of eternal mercy is a dangerous misconception. Eventually, patience runs out and God punishes the sinners. You see this with humanity in Noah’s story, and with Sodom and Gomorrah in Abraham’s story. Therein lies the importance of cultivating genuine faith before the Second Coming of Christ.
“Watch, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.” (Matthew 25:13)
Experiencing doubt is a natural and even necessary part of faith, as long as you can conquer it. Find the encouragement you need from the people around you, and never forget the inspiration of Jesus’ miracles. Through the stories in the book of John, Jesus’ acts continue to touch our lives and propel us past darkness, disappointment, and despair. Embrace this encouragement, and transcend your faith beyond any level of doubt.
